In a discussion about the process of writing new single "With Love", Chris Rudel describes how the song arrived in its final form: "I revisited the song again and decided I wasn’t feeling the vibe of it in that particular incarnation. However, the opening lyric which begins the song completely a capella still resonated deeply: “nobody ever felt better putting themselves down”. Eventually I had this epiphany: lose the instrumental accompaniment altogether and instead focus on expanding the feel of the beginning of the song using only my voice. I wanted it to sound like a hymn."

Sound like a hymn it does. Rudel would go on to explain the song's function as a direct foil to previous single "Solving for Ex". After all, the pair of songs are intended as companion pieces with "Ex" labeled as Chapter One of the PAINTER trilogy and "With Love" taking up duties as Chapter Two. While the arc of the story is not all that clear, there is a good chance the third installment will tie up the loose ends. What is apparent is the contrast in tone and content between the first two chapters including their respective cover art. "Ex" was all about fire as a metaphor for cleansing oneself of the past as well as a means of finding light in dark places as evidenced by its cover design: a single flame set against a stark black background. The impressionistic cover art for "With Love" with its subtle rainbow color palette suggests inclusiveness and resembles the type of images of space we see - of creation at its most basic form. Indeed Rudel has alluded to the message of the song being one of summoning our own love so that we can send it out there in the ether for those who need it to receive it. It's a hopeful thought delivered by an inspiring song as its vehicle.

"I Wished the World Would Stop" arrives as the next single in the launch cycle for Chris Rudel's long-delayed third album. While lead cut "hope floats" is an atmospheric piano ballad that became the singer-songwriter's surprise biggest hit to date, it was follow-up single "Best Kept Secret" that signaled Rudel's intentional shift to a stripped-back acoustic aesthetic. It defies the conventions of a pop single in nearly every way. For starters, it runs 10 minutes long, dispenses with typical form and structure and features extended improvisatory piano solos.

A previously unreleased track from the sessions for his debut album, "Summer Song" is an upbeat mid tempo cut with a stomping beat underpinning some of the singer-songwriter's most irresistible hooks. It may have been written three years ago but its sentiment is perhaps more important than ever as the lyrics remind us: "drive at your own speed, don't miss the scenery - the best part of the ride!"

"Best Kept Secret" is a significant departure from the sombre pathos of its predecessor, instead offering an intimate love song that maintains the raw-hewn sonic aesthetic that is expected to characterize the singer's forthcoming LP due for release in 2020.
