Dangerous Paradise is a bold, brilliant statement of artistic intimacy and experimentalism. Lyrically, it plumbs harrowing depths, addressing a breakup, touching on the plight of a post-modern society on the verge of nihilistic depravity and delivering a sardonic commentary on youth culture's obsession with vapid colloquialisms. And that's all covered in the first four songs. There are eleven more that follow, each a dense rumination, vacillating between the internal, personal struggles of the singer-songwriter himself and the greater context of the universe at large. Sonically, the album balances trend and tradition with deftness; rock cuts are juxtaposed with bouncy pop confections, trap beats underpin symphonic swells and soulful vocals before veering off into the occasional piano confessional. Throughout, the LP is anchored by Rudel's breathtaking musical vision which ultimately makes its strongest case for greatness in the clever way it manages to be both intensely intimate and broadly accessible at the same time.
